Burst pipe? What to do in the first 10 minutes

A burst pipe can dump hundreds of litres of water into your home in a very short time. Acting fast can save you thousands in restoration costs.

Step list:

  • Turn off the water main: This is the most important step. Find your water meter (usually near the front boundary) and turn the valve clockwise until it stops.
  • Drain the system: Open the lowest cold water tap in your house (usually a garden tap) to let the remaining water in the pipes drain out there rather than through the leak.
  • Contain the water: Use buckets, towels, or a mop to catch as much water as possible and prevent it from soaking into carpets or floorboards.
  • Turn off electricity: If water is leaking near power points, lights, or your switchboard, turn off the electricity at the main switch.
  • Don't DIY: Attempting to patch a high-pressure pipe yourself can often lead to a bigger burst.
  • Call Paul: Paul provides rapid response for burst pipes across Melbourne.
